Lakeland upsets John Jay in football

The last year-and-a-half the Lakeland football team has played as entertaining a brand of ball as any team in Section 1.

Unfortunately, it had little to show for it, losing six games in the final minute during that time.

Yorktown football rolls to win on homecoming day

Yorktown High School had it all when their Huskers hosted Horace Greeley on the gridiron: it was a big game in the Class A playoff race, its all-section running back was returning from injury, it’s 1993 and 1994 state champions were being honored and it was a fall-summer weather afternoon to boot on homecoming day.

Lakeland soccer wins sixth straight game

The Lakeland boys’ soccer team showed its dominance this past week, continuing its winning ways. With three wins, the Hornets boosted their record to 9-2 and have won six in a row.

Ben Franklin opens new playground

A “cut the ribbon!” chant broke out on the grounds of Ben Franklin Elementary School shortly before 10 a.m. Tuesday as students celebrated the official opening of their new $100,000 playground.

Sen. Greg Ball, who helped secure a $75,000 state grant to make the project possible, was more than happy to oblige.

Athlete Spotlight: Elusive Lakeland junior passionate about football

Lakeland junior Anthony Capozzi is a halfback/defensive back on the varsity football team. He also plays lacrosse.

How old were you when you first started playing football and how did you get into it? 
I started playing football when I was 9 years old and I got into it just from having catches with my dad in the backyard.

What do you think are your strengths as a football player and how would you describe your style as a running back? 
My strengths as a football player are my quickness and speed but my passion and heart is to win. My style of running back would be elusive with great vision.
