When it comes to playing a rival, you can rest assure that the Lakeland Hornets will always get up for theirs.
That proved to be the case when Lakeland’s field hockey squad won at Yorktown 8-0 on Oct. 1.

“We just came out with such intensity and really wanted to beat Yorktown because they are a local rival,” Lakeland’s Dana Bozek said.

“It’s a pretty big rivalry. We come out harder every Yorktown game because they are so close to us.”
Lakeland jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead with goals off corners by Stephanie Scala and Bozek, with Molly Fitzpatrick and Gab Celentano recording the assists.

Yorktown though appeared to cut the lead in half on a goal by Alana Donovan with 11:30 to go before halftime but it was disallowed because no one on the Huskers got a touch on it inside the circle.

“It was exciting, it’s always exciting to score but it was a bummer when it didn’t count,” Yorktown’s Emalee Mongno said.

Scala then added to the Hornets’ lead 23 seconds later with a goal assisted by Valerie Perkins.
“I was moving my feet well,” Scala said. “That tip on the goal was coming from my footwork.”

Lakeland (11-0) ended the first half with goals by Brianna Muniz and Bozek, with Bozek’s assisted by Celentano on a corner, to go up 5-0 at halftime.

“It’s definitely good to get a big lead and be energetic in the first half, just to set the tone and know that it will be hard for them to come back from,” Scala said.

Sarah Bard, with an assist from Felicia Costanzo, Fitzpatrick, with an assist from Muniz and Scala, with Celentano assisting, did the damage for the Hornets in the second half.

“Me and Gab just had a great give and go on the goal,” Scala said.

That type of teamwork has been symbolic of the Hornet’s season so far.

“We are really working well as a team,” Bozek said. “Our passing skills are awesome. That is why we are able to capitalize and put it in the net so much.”

Yorktown (4-4-1) entered the contest knowing that it was going up against a buzz saw in a team that has won the last four state Class B crowns but it entered it with the right attitude.

“We go in every game confident, knowing we have the opportunity to win,” Mongno said. “We have all the skills and everything. We just go in with a positive mindset.”

Husker goalie Bianca Dente did all she could to hold the Hornets off, making 12 saves.

“She did great and our defense really held its own today,” Mongno said. “We cut off some passes and really had our position. We did the best we could. We were all right on transition going up the field, that helped.”
Lakeland also had two more wins, beating visiting John Jay 1-0 on Oct. 3 and host Putnam Valley 3-0 two days later.

Bozek scored with Alex Halpin registering a save against John Jay. Bozek scored twice and Muniz once with Celentano recording two assists against Putnam Valley.
