Wine and Puppies at Guiding Eyes

Guiding Eyes for the Blind, a national guide dog school based in Yorktown, hosted its fourth annual wine tasting benefit over the weekend at its headquarters and training center off Granite Springs Road.
The Oct. 6 event was organized by Amy Dixon, the self-labeled “Blind Somalier.” A Certified Wine Specialist, Dixon is studying to become a Master of Wine, of which there are only 212 in the world. She has traveled the vineyards of Portugal, Italy, France and Germany, and is now working alongside Elvis, her first guide dog from the nonprofit organization.
Affiliated Police Associations supports re-election of Yorktown Supervisor Michael Grace
Supervisor Michael Grace has been endorsed by the Affiliated Police Associations (APA) of Westchester in his bid for re-election this November. The APA consists of 58 Police Benevolent Associations serving Westchester County.
“I am very honored and proud that the Affiliated Police Associations have come out in favor of my candidacy,” Grace said. “Over the past two years, I have worked well with both the Yorktown Police Department and the PBA of Yorktown.”
Grace touted his record of establishing emergency protocols since he entered office in 2012, which includes the creation of the Citizens Emergency Response Team (CERT). He said the endorsement is noteworthy because his opponent, Nick Bianco, is a retired Yonkers police officer.

Yorktown wins on homecoming in girls soccer

After Yorktown played visiting Croton-Harmon to a 0-0 halftime tie, the Huskers busted out for three second-half goals in a 3-0 triumph in its homecoming girls soccer contest.
“We had many opportunities in the first half,” Yorktown coach Rich Armstrong said. “We couldn’t finish. We had a couple of shots right in front of the goal. We just didn’t connect on them.”
Lakeland field hockey continues to dominate; crushes Yorktown

When it comes to playing a rival, you can rest assure that the Lakeland Hornets will always get up for theirs.
That proved to be the case when Lakeland’s field hockey squad won at Yorktown 8-0 on Oct. 1.
“We just came out with such intensity and really wanted to beat Yorktown because they are a local rival,” Lakeland’s Dana Bozek said.
Victims, survivors honored at Support-A-Walk

The services of Support Connection were epitomized Sunday as more than 8,000 people came out to FDR Park in support of those affected by breast and ovarian cancer.
The 19th Annual Support-A-Walk brought out a mix of survivors, patients currently undergoing treatment, or those that simply wanted to remember a lost loved one.
Yorktown weighs full-day kindergarten

Full-day kindergarten is a top priority for the Yorktown Central School District and district officials hope to implement the program in time for the 2014-15 school year, Superintendent Dr. Ralph Napolitano announced at Monday’s School Board meeting.
